Microsoft 365 Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) Setup

Client instructions for Microsoft 365 MFA

Since cell phone numbers can be taken over to intercept text messages, the most secure way to use MFA is through the Microsoft Authenticator app.  You can download it at:

To set up MFA:

  1. Download and install the Microsoft authenticator on your phone (links above).
  2. From your computer’s web browser, go to https://aka.ms/MFASetup.
  3. For the preferred option, select Notify me through app.  This will pop up a window for you that will just require one or two taps to login.  If your phone frequently uses battery saver mode, you may need to use the option below it, Use verification code from app or token.  This will require you to enter a six-digit code .

  4. Check the Authenticator app or Token  option and click Set up Authenticator app.

  5. Open the authenticator app (typically a blue icon).
  6. Tap the three vertical dots in the top right corner.
  7. Tap Add account.
  8. Tap Work or school account.
  9. Point your phone’s camera at the QR code (the square with lots of dots on your computer under step 3. Scan the image below).
  10. Click Next in your computer’s browser.
  11. Check your phone for the prompt and tap Approve.
If you don’t get the prompt on your phone within 15 seconds, you may need to change the verification option to Use verification code or to use a call or text option.
  12. Click Save.
  13. After setting this up, you may get prompted to log back into your email or Teams.
